Manu Samoa flies in for Rugby World Cup 2023 wearing Macron’s new shirts

The blue of the Pacific Ocean, the flight of the seagulls, and the symbols that capture the resilience of the Samoan people. This is the ‘story’ told by the new jerseys that Manu Samoa, the Samoan national rugby XV, will wear for the Rugby World Cup 2023 due to kick off in France on the 8th of September. Manu Samoa is a recent addition to the Macron family and the Italian company, which is increasingly cementing its position as the leading name in rugby teamwear, has just completed the new kits in which the Samoan team will make their first appearance against Chile in Bordeaux on the 16th of September.

In addition to traditional Samoan symbols, the new jerseys also carry a clear message of sustainability and respect for the environment, being made from Eco Fabric, a polyester material derived entirely from recycled plastic. Around 13 half-litre plastic bottles are recycled for every jersey produced.

The ‘Home’ shirt is blue with a V neck and white details. The inside neck label is customised with the colours and logo of the team, as well as the hashtag #FOLAUFAATASI (referring to the team’s journey to the Rugby World Cup), and the Macron logo and the words ‘Designed in Bologna’, certifying that the garment is conceived, designed and produced at Macron’s Bologna Headquarters. A customised sweatband runs around the neck repeating the words ‘MANU SAMOA’ interspersed with the team’s logo. A tone on tone dye-sub print on the sleeves represents 5 seagulls (‘gogosina’) in the form of the Southern Cross. The Rugby World Cup 2023 logo, the Macron Hero and the badge of Manu Samoa are all embroidered on the chest. Another important graphic detail appears at the bottom of the back, again in a tone on tone dye-sub print. This reproduces the “Pulatama” tattoo that marks the passage of Samoans to manhood. The shorts are white and the socks blue with a white band at the top.

The ‘Away’ shirt is white and has a V neck and blue details. It repeats the same design and graphics as the ‘Home’ version. The inside neck label and sweatband are similarly customised and the seagulls motif is again dye-sub printed on the sleeves. The “Pulatama” design appears again in tone on tone at the bottom of the shirt and the Rugby World Cup 2023 and Macron Hero logos can be seen on the chest alongside that of Manu Samoa. The ‘Away’ shorts are blue with white drawstrings and the socks white with a blue band at the top. Both shirts are Body Fit garments. The fabrics used are Eco-Armevo with Eco-Boditex for the inserts. As well as being lightweight and breathable, both materials are also extremely hard-wearing.
