Colours and patterns from tradition on Romania’s new jerseys for the Rugby World Cup 2023

On Saturday 9 September, at the Stade de Bordeaux, the Romanian national rugby team will be taking to the pitch for its Rugby World Cup 2023 debut against Ireland. On that occasion, the “Stejarii” will be wearing the new jerseys made by Macron, the technical partner of the Federaţiă Română de Rugby (FRR) since the beginning of 2021. The new match kits, Home and Away, represent the colours, symbols, sense of community and team spirit of the central-eastern European country and carry a clear message of sustainability and respect for the environment. The Italian brand makes the jerseys for all its national teams and clubs using Eco Fabric 100% polyester made from recycled plastic.

The new Rugby Romania Home kit is yellow with a mandarin collar with blue piping. The right sleeve has a wide blue border, while the one on the left is red. Both feature sublimation-printed graphics inspired by typical geometric designs found on traditional Romanian fabrics and clothing. In particular, they are inspired by the traditional costumes of dancers called “Călușarii”, who used to perform an ancient Romanian dance, with ancestral origins in ancient Dacia. This magical dance, was said to bring well-being and drive away evil spirits. Printed on the back neckline is the Romanian flag. Embroidered on the chest, in blue, are the Rugby World Cup 2023 logo, the Macron Hero and the Rugby Romania coat of arms. The shorts are blue and the socks are yellow.

The Away version is white, again with a mandarin collar edged in black. Also black are the wide sleeve edgings, above which there is a sublimation print of a graphic inspired by plant motifs, which can always be found on traditional garments and which evoke nature, its cycles and the importance of the rhythm of life and its dynamism. The Rugby World Cup, Macron Hero and Rugby Romania logos are embroidered in black and on the back neckline is the Romanian flag in the classic blue, yellow and red vertical stripes. The kit is completed by black shorts and white socks.
