US, INSPIRED BY SPORT

Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.” The famous quote by Nelson Mandela fully conveys that sentiment of union, cooperation and participation that animated the athletes who 125 years ago in Athens opened the first edition ever of the Olympic Games. It was April 6th, 1896, and since then, thanks to a UN resolution, the day has been celebrated as the “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.”

THE POWER OF SPORT

Never as in this year has the celebration acquired a deeper meaning. Sport activity, as all other sectors of our lives, has suffered the effects of the pandemic, and yet the very intrinsic power of sport has made it able to react to the vilest attacks. People have strived to remain active and fit, regardless of the circumstances, by working out at home or in the parks, exchanging just glances with fellow athletes. The community maintained a safe distance, but remained united as never before.

A NEW START TO WIN

The new start of sport will have to happen at any level: it will be a new beginning for the practitioners, the producers, the sellers, the story tellers. The 2021 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace carries a fundamental message, that team spirit offers a gateway to escape the most critical of circumstances. Professional sports has found a way to partially restart, even if in absence of a real audience. Amateur and non-professional sport, however, is in dire need of finding those precious moments of joy and aggregation again. Macron is and has always been ready to support its own community of athletes and rekindle again the magic. 

SPORT AS MESSENGER OF SUSTAINABILITY

Sport is union and sharing of values, and one of these is the pursuit of environmental sustainability.  Sport and nature are an inseparable combination, since sport practice often entails an interaction with the surrounding environment and an appreciation of its nuances. Macron recognizes this connection and has taken upon itself the mission of creating a collection of clothing that reflects a respect of the environment and a care for the wellbeing of the athletes. On International Day of Sport, when the values of sport are being celebrated, it is important to offer to all athletes those instruments that will make them also messengers of environmental sustainability. 

For more than a year now we have been cohabiting with a pandemic, but, as the French writer Jean Giradoux once said “the love of sport is an epidemic of health.” Sport may become our counterbalancing force in these difficult times.
