Her Hoops AU - Women’s basketball as a path for personal growth

A YOUNG REALITY WITH AN AMBITIOUS GOAL

The story of Her Hoops AU, an Australian women's basketball academy, is young and exciting. Founded in February 2019 by professional basketball player Makailah Dyer, Her Hoops AU was created to offer young female athletes (from middle school to high school) high-level basketball training and a personal growth path that develops confidence, work ethic and team spirit. The project's primary objective is to train athletes and women, coaching and enhancing the qualities needed to be positive role models and leaders both on the court and within their community.

RECOGNISING THE VALUE OF WOMEN’S SPORT

The drop-out rate in women's basketball is more than double that of men's. This statistic results mainly due to fewer opportunities, lack of quality experiences and absence of specific protection. The Her Hoops project is thus centred on the desire to provide equal opportunities for female athletes as for their male counterparts. Helping them grow, first as girls and then as women, both from a sporting and a human point of view. More than 200 female athletes have been trained by Her Hoops AU, and there are plans to expand the programme across the country.

RUBY VLAHOV, ONE OF HER HOOPS’ MANY SUCCESS STORIES

Ruby Vlahov is a young athlete who started attending Her Hoops training at age 14 and quickly gained the spotlight as a rising basketball star in Western Australia. In addition to being a talented athlete, Ruby excels in her studies and has proven to be a natural leader among her teammates. At the academy, she also coaches Little Hoopers, 5 to 10-year-old girls who are just starting out in their basketball careers. "Although basketball development on the court is very important to us at Her Hoops AU," said Makailah Dyer, "we also strive to develop our girls into young women capable of excelling in every area of life. Ruby truly represents what we want athletes to look like in our program, and we are very proud of her."
