Motherwell FC, when club and community are as one

Motherwell FC, when club and community are as one

Motherwell Football Club, based in North Lanarkshire in Scotland, was formed back in 1886 after local sides Alpha FC and Glencairn merged following a meeting between the two clubs in a Merry Street pub. 130 years later it would become the first Scottish club to be owned by its own supporters. The town of Motherwell was the heart and soul of Scotland’s steel production up until 1992 when the Ravenscraig Steelworks closed, and this is reflected in the club’s nickname, the Steelmen.

Claret and amber, colours represented all over the world

The transition from single ownership to fan control began in 2015 and the following year the Well Society supporters group acquired 76 per cent of the shares. Any Motherwell FC fan can become a member of the club and join the Well Society. To become a member you can make a direct donation or invest monthly (from £10 upwards). You receive a document certifying your percentage ownership and can vote on club matters. The spirit is to be part of something special and not just from Scotland, but from all over the world. The Well Society is thus spread all over the world. There are members in France, Belgium, Denmark, Holland, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, China, Singapore, Australia and even South Africa.

Investing in the club, youth and social activities

Being a member of the Well Society means giving a future to a club that has made history in Scottish football. Another very important aspect of the club is to be able to be involved in initiatives with a social background and for the benefit of the local community, which is an integral part of the fabric of the club. Football is a powerful tool for involvement and inclusion and football clubs have the great power to engage people in a way that few other organisations can. Give back to the community what you receive as a club. For Motherwell FC and its fans this also means 'Become your own hero' on and off the pitch.

...and that time when Motherwell won the Copa del Rey

Football stories can always be fascinating and in this case the pages that tell it are quite yellowed because it is a story from almost a hundred years ago, in 1927. To be precise, it is not the official Copa del Rey, but a trophy that the then King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, had specially made to reward the winning team of a tournament between Real Union (who had won the official Copa del Rey), Real Madrid, Swansea and Motherwell FC. The Scots won the final beating the Blancos 3-1 and returned home with this Copa del Rey, let's say special edition. A success of which along the banks of the River Clyde they are still very proud today.
